Undoubtedly Florence has a lot to offer. The capital of the Italian region Tuscany has been a creative hub for centuries, which shows in it's manifold landmarks and artworks that are not only displayed in museums but throughout the city. The Ponte Vecchio or the basilica of Santa Maria Novella are two of the architectural highlights that are obvious to any visitor of the city.
The Uffizi Gallery surprises with an incredible breadth of sculptures that are displayed in it's long corridors with incredible painted ceilings. Different coloured marbles, brass and even wood are used on some of the busts and statues - some of which are equally as interesting to discover as is the famous painting "Birth of Venus" by Boticelli that is displayed in one of the rooms of the vast gallery.
Another landmark is the Galleria dell'Accademia that hosts Michelangelo's David - an incredible work of art of astonishing detail and size.
Of course, Italy is famous for it's culinary excellency and we have listed some of the great places for food and drink that are not to miss in Florence:
FOCACCIA at All'Antico Vinaio, Via dei Neri, 74/R
At this little sandwich bar just behind the Palazzo Vecchio you can find the most delicious focaccia for as little as 5 Euros. A long queue at almost all times guides makes this place impossible to spot - the wait is worth it though with grilled vegetables, cured meats, truffle oil and many toppings that you can customise your choice of focaccia with.
WINE AND DINE at Fuori Porta, Via del Monte alle Croci, 10/R
This wine shop and restaurant offers some of the finest wines of the region - and from Italy generally. Close to the Piazzale Michelangelo that offers a fabulous view of the city of Florence from above, Fuori Porta is great for a glass of wine or a full-on dinner at a reasonable price.
COFFEE at Ditta Artigianale, Via dei Neri 32/R
At this trendy cafe in the heart of Florence you can enjoy a decent cup of coffee of your choice. Just on the same street as All'Antico Vinaio you might as well enjoy a cup of coffee after eating a wonderful focaccia.
ICE CREAM at Vivoli, Via dell'Isola delle Stinche, 7/R
The small ice cream parlour opposite a lovely small church offers a delicious choice of ice cream - especially the range of chocolate ice cream, whether dark chocolate or chocolate infused with orange oil or the fig ice cream are exeptional.
PIZZA at Il Pizzaiuolo, Via dei Macci, 113
If you want to eat a no-nonsense tasty traditional pizza, this is the right place to go. Besides all the traditional pizza you can customise and enjoy a cool glass of lager.
APERITIVO at Piazza Santo Spirito
There are many places in Florence where it is wonderful to have a drink and nibbles - the typical "aperitivo" by which small foods are served with a (mostly) alcoholic drink. At the Piazza Santo Spirito there are several restaurants and cafes and the atmosphere is lovely in the early evening.
